Complete Chronicles is GCM Editor's Choice
Great review, by Mark Smith: "Myst Uru: Complete Chronicles is a spectacular adventure, and while I was sad to see the online component fail before I even got to login I am glad to see that Cyan came through and delivered some substantial content that not only enhances the original adventure, but completes the saga.
"If you are a Myst fan or just looking for an amazing adventure then purchasing and playing Uru is a no-brainer. Uru fleshes out the history of Myst and provides volumes of interesting details about the world of D’Ni while testing your powers of observation and logic. You’ll be captivated from beginning to end."

Introducing the D'Olympics From the D'LA
LaReh posted: "BIG NEWS! The D'ni League of Activities (D'LA) who were just getting off the ground when Uru Live ended, are gearing up back into action in a big way with the newly planned D'Olympics to be held on the DLA shard next month. Sh'aeri met me in Ae'Gura tonight and outlined her requests for participation.
"She's asking for the various shard groups to each send a group to compete in the various events, which you can read about here. She's also asked for players who won't be "athletically-competing" to participate as Judges, Ambassadors, etc.
"So what do you all think? She's trying to schedule this for the weekend beginning Friday September 10th so we need to get organized quickly. I'd like to schedule a meeting for all interested parties in the Greeter Live Chat room on Wed night September 1st at 8 pm ET. It sounds very exciting and could be the start of some great future inter-shard events." Post your thoughts here.

GoG member Erandel will be coordinating various events, competitions, and fun-filled activities which will now take the place of the former Live Chat monthly Gatherings. The Live Chat Gatherings were created as a stop-gap replacement for meeting in Uru Live, and now will be superceded and replaced by actual scheduled events in Until Uru. Myst IV at PAX
From GreyDragon: "As it looks now our graphics programmer Bob is going to be on a panel for Saturday. I wish I could make it, but I am only going to be able to go Sunday. Myst 4 Revelation will be showed at the expo along with some other Ubisoft games. You?ll probably see me at all the panel discussions on Sunday. Anyways maybe I?ll see ya there."
Click here to get more info on PAX.
And PennyArcade had a few things to say: " I might not be writing about Myst IV at all if, after completing the demo, something hadn't caught my eye. You know as well as I do that after one finishes the demo for a retail product, they are invariably buffeted by a series of advertisements that must be got through if one is to regain control of their machine. I am so used to disregarding information of this sort that each page of these presentations registers to my conscious mind as white light. Some piece of relevant data had apparently crept into that region, though - so I reloaded the game and quit it again just to see. True enough, Myst IV is being released only on DVD. To which I say, thank God."

Another Until Uru Server Release
From chip: "This Server Release is a quick update from the 0.38.9 release from a few days ago. Changes from 0.38.9:
All Servers: NetCore Logging Enabled by Default
All Servers: Enable all HTTP Operations. You will not want to allow Public Access to the Server's HTTP Ports. Please correctly set your Firewalls up!
All Servers: New Global Configuration Var, 'StatusLogMask'. This is a Bitmask that sets which log types are written to your disk.
kStatusLogShowNone = 2
kStatusLogShowAppMsg = 4
kStatusLogShowErrorMsg = 8
kStatusLogShowWarningMsg = 16
kStatusLogShowDebugMsg = 32
The default is kStatusLogShowAppMsg(4) + kStatusLogShowErrorMsg(8) + kStatusLogShowWarningMsg(16) + kStatusLogShowDebugMsg(32) = 60. This default will give you the same level of logging that was present in 0.38.8. To disable all logging, set StatusLogMask=2. The value in the configuration file must be in Decimal.
AuthServer: Small fix for Server Status Support
0.38.10 is available from our download page now."

Preview of Myst IV at IGN.com
Myst IV: Revelation Hands-On. Good article, new images, lots of spoilers. Here are a few comments: "Revelation has been under in-house development at Ubisoft Montreal virtually since the previous installment was released, and the fruits of their labor are looking damn tasty.
"Fans of the series, rest assured, because Revelation retains the same ambience you've come to know and (hopefully) love. From the art style of the expansive, fantastical environments to the familiar characters and story arc, Revelation looks like a true heir to the throne-- while introducing a much higher level and amount of visual and sound quality." GameRankings Previews Myst
Featured preview by Russell Frushtick, contributing editor. Here are a few comments:
"For Myst fans, Revelation returns to the traditional style that we last saw in Myst III: Exile. Gone is the 3rd person camera, real-time 3D environments and online play. Instead, the forgotten art of prerendered backgrounds returns in full force. Now, I know that everyone is "all about" real-time 3D these days, but for a game like Myst, the return to prerendered is a good one. See, as good as graphics are these days, modeled polygons will never look as good as the "painted on" stuff, since your processor doesn't have to, well, process it all. The end result is that you're able to explore environments that are just as detailed (if not more so) than some Hollywood special effects jobs...and all without a top-of-the-line PC! I can tell you that the locales you'll be visiting in Myst 4 easily top anything we've seen thus far, as they're filled with indigenous wildlife, swaying plants, rippling water, and god knows how many other minute details.
"The adventure genre is dead? Balderdash! When Myst 4: Revelation hits later this year, folks will be clamoring to get back into the world of impossible puzzles and weird creatures."

"Since I have just finished designing about 25 puzzles in Futo's Italian Vacation Puzzle, and of course the Triple Jigsaw Puzzle and of course Sharper's Spy Room Puzzle, I have decided to start a new Guild of Puzzle Makers.
"I am presently designing the Guild Hall for the Guild of Cartographers HERE, where I am putting all of the Guilds maps, I thought I would also create a wing for the Guild of Puzzle Makers and a place to store all of my puzzles for those who will want to play them in the future.
"So if you think it might like to join the Guild of Puzzle Makers, just sign up here by requesting. Everyone will start as an apprentice. After you have created 5 puzzles, you will become a Guildsman and move up from there.
" We will need to elect a Grand Master who will take on the role of leadership. I am open to anyone else who wants to lead the guild. I plan on "building" the site and will continue to make puzzles, I just wondered if someone wanted to join me.
"Eleri has already created some puzzles and is our first member. Do you want to join us? The guild hall will be a modification of the Pyramid Puzzle in Kadish unless someone else has a better idea. All of the doors will act as rooms to place different kinds of puzzles at first as well as one for the forum and so on.
"I am always available to help out anyone who has never created a puzzle before and wants some tips on how to begin.

Until Uru No Longer Requires a CD Key
This from Ryan Warzecha: "To quote Chip:
"The current license agreement requires you to own your own copy of Uru: Ages Beyond Myst.
"So, if you do not have (1) full CD-Rom copy of Uru Ages Beyond Myst for every single Auth Key you Purchase and use, you are in violation of the License Agreement.
"Why did we remove the CD-Key at this time?
"Mostly to make it easier on people from .au (who never got keys!), and so we can possibly make a patch for CC. Note, that this is NOT a promise there will be a patch for CC, it is just keeping our options open.
"Does this mean anyone can Pirate Uru Ages Beyond Myst?
"No. To legally use Until Uru, you must own Uru Ages Beyond Myst for every account."

Strong Review for Myst IV Revelation
From SunHerald.com, Jesse Brown writes: "Revelation has a very polished look. You can tell that a lot of time went into making and producing it. Graphically, the game is along the lines of "Myst III: Exile," where players can look around in a 360 degree manner, so it is a "real" world. Almost all of the objects in the Ages (worlds) can be manipulated in some manner, so players really have to take the time to look around and see what can be done.
"The game is geared for all types of players. The staff said they wanted to bring it to as many people as possible. The puzzles can be challenging, but certainly not impossible. There are many ways to solve them, and they leave you with a sense of accomplishment and reward when you do.
"I hope you are excited, as I know that I cannot wait for this great game to be upon us!"

Update to the Previous Something Else™ Story
As mentioned earlier, rumors are running rampant that Something Else™ will be out by Christmas. Well, leave it to RAWA to bring us to our senses: "Those of you who've been on the Lyst awhile will know that I give this little disclaimer/reminder just about every time a Myst-related article is mentioned: "Don't believe everything you read."
Stephan is not referring to Something Else here.
The only thing that fits "just finished" and "out by Christmas" is "The Path of the Shell". Maybe the author mistook Stephan's description of TPotS for a "sequel" to Uru rather than an expansion.
Something Else, to contrast, is not finished and will definitely not be out by Christmas.
Hope that helps, RAWA" Thanks to the guys at UruObsession for staying on top of this story.

Progress With Revelationist's Puzzles
More added to what seems to be two different puzzles (or could they be connected?).
Here are the first two images released:

There is a letter in each image, and each image is numbered: First shot: 4 and X, second image: 26 and D.
There is alot of speculation about the meaning of this, but no way to know until more images appear.
In the other puzzle, another clue appeared:
| "When this piece is found, We'll be over half way there. Next we go to Jerle's town, The title will be 'Fair's fair.'" This led brilers to the MystCommunity Forum, where he found: "To find the third out of five, We return to the home base. If there was a pic from UruLive, What would be it's showcase?" By the end of the month, about half the game should be through it's first pass in production (including modeling, texturing, lighting and scripting). We're moving fast, but the first 95% of a game is the easy part...it's that last 5% that'll get ya."

Reminder: Mysterigon---Oregon Mini-Mysterium Aug 13-15
This is to remind you of what K'laamas wrote to The Lyst: "I'm happy to announce the upcoming "Mysterigon", a Mini-Mysterium to be held Friday Aug 13 through Sunday August 15 in the area of the cities of Bend & Sisters, Oregon. It's nothing big, fancy, and formal like the official Mysterium--there's just a few of us Myst fans who are all going to be in central Oregon for various reasons, so we decided to get together (especially since I'm one of the many people who can't make it to Toronto :'( ). And we'd like to invite anyone who would like to attend to come :)
"Bend and Sisters are 2 towns, about 25 miles apart, in central Oregon, just east of the Cascade mountain range. Bend is named thusly because it was built on a "bend" of the Deschutes (deh-SHOOTS) river, and Sisters is named after the "Three Sisters" mountains directly to the west of it. From Portland OR, it's about 155 miles and a 3-hr drive to Sisters, and 180 miles and a 3.5 hr to Bend. From Boise ID, it's about 340 miles and a 6.5-hr drive to Sisters, and 365 miles and a 7-hr drive to Bend.
"We don't have a really structured schedule--we just want to get together with our fellow Myst-fans and have a good time as friends :) With that in mind, we do have a few ideas for things we can do in the Bend/Sisters area, which I'll put at the bottom of my post. If anyone has any suggestions for what we can do (whether you plan on attending or not ;)), don't hesitate to speak up.
"I'm gonna post this entire thing over at the Myst Community and D'ni Linguistic Fellowship Web Boards."

More Until Uru Info
Not only are avatars imported from "Path of the Shell" and "To D'ni" corrupting the Until Uru servers, avatars imported from a game using Uru patch version 1.2 are, as well. Jaimie sent a note to The Lyst that covered a conversation he had with Chip, the Cyan employee helping coordinate Until Uru: "When I reinstalled ABM over the last couple days, so I could try out UU, I posted a message on Dni Guild, asking whether I should update ABM to 1.2 before I used the UU patch. Chip from Cyan Worlds replied to me and said that, NO, I should -not- use the 1.2 patch. He stated that the fixes that were implemented in the 1.2 patch are accounted for in the UU patch in some form, and that the 1.2 patch (or the Update tab in ABM) should not be used, because it might break UU." So, be sure and use an avatar from a clean install of ABM, without the patch.

Important Notice to Until Uru Users
This from grey dragon: "Do NOT import characters who have done any of the expansion packs. The one reason the servers are getting corrupt are people importing characters that have done some of the x packs. Because these ages don't exist in Until Uru. They equal a null value and thus break things...
Just please don't do it..GD."
edog's Uru pictures
Zardoz posted: "Eric Warman (edog) is an artist at CyanWorlds (can't remember if he has a more official title). His website (www.shagwall.com) has a "hidden" (not very) link to lots of Uru and other pictures that represent his work. With edog's blessing, here's the link: edog's portfolio. Be sure to look at the wood burning pics, they are fantastic. The cover of the Uru soundtrack is one of them."
The site is just incredible. Thanks, Zardoz!

Another Puzzle?
Someone posting as Revelationist has left two curious clues at the MystWorlds Forum:
"There are five pieces you must locate,
Some are easy, some are hard.
One piece a day, early or late,
The last day brings the reward."
and
"To find the first piece,
Think of a forum that died,
Yet was given a new lease.

The Guild of Greeters Needs Your Input on Fund-Raising
Tijara wrote: "With the advent of Untìl Uru, we desperately need to upgrade our bandwidth capabilities. Due to your generosity we have a good chunk of funds in the bank which we as yet have not used because we have been saving it all for this upgrade, but as yet do not have enough. Now that we are running Uru on the servers our need has become urgent and we would like to upgrade as soon as possible so that everyone can access the servers and fully enjoy Untìl Uru whilst still having a functioning website and forum (anyone noticed how slow
the forum is today)
"With this in mind we would like your feedback on what you consider the best way to fund the guild.
"We basically have 2 options, we can continue with donations, and hope that they come in at a sufficient rate
to keep us online, or we can move to a subscription system.
"If we were to go to a subscription it would be something along the lines of the following (nothing is set in stone - these are just ideas at this time)....
"First we would institute GoG membership levels, free membership or paid subscriber....
"Free membership:
Basic access to the forums - no upload ability for avatars, images or file attachments
Basic access to Gallery - viewing only no uploads
Paid subscriber
Full access to the forums including ability to upload avatars, images and files to posts, etc
Considerable (undetermined as yet) storage space for uploading images to gallery
Guild of Greeter email address, using pop mail.
Guild Associate Status
And of course you would get access to the GoG Uru Shard. Now we could restrict the shard to paid members only, but that kind of defeats our purpose and 'raison d'etre', We are greeters after all and here for everyone to find help with. So at this point everyone would gain access to the shard, but we would hope that people who use it as their home shard, would have the honour and integrity to subscribe.
"What do you all think? Would you be willing to go along with this? If so how much are you willing to pay? Naturally full GoG accounts would be available (as they are now) to any subscriber who wishes to know what their money is being spent on
"I have attached a poll to see what the consensus of opinion is. Please post asap - we really wish to resolve this asap - before the server melts down and besides the shard is so busy Wolfie and I can't get on so that is unacceptable j/k" Post your input here.

News of Until Uru Spreads
From Slashdot: "Posted by simoniker on Saturday August 07 from the back-from-beyond dept. ToriaUru writes "Over at Cyanworlds.com, there's now a newly launched Until Uru page, providing fans with all the information they need to download a new client and/or create their own server for the canceled online part of Uru: Ages Beyond Myst. Thanks to all the hard working people at Cyan who made this happen!" We previously reported on Uru Live's cancellation, and the Until Uru FAQ, along with a 'giant gnarly disclaimer', explains the downloadable add-ons are "enabling independently run [fan-maintained] servers that any client can connect to... this is not URU Live" - though there is a "nominal fee" of $5.95 for player authentication for those who want to try the service."

Hints for a Successful Until Uru
Simon (aka Magician) wrote to The Lyst: "Quite a few people (including myself) asked this in CyanChat today, so I thought I'd mention it on TheLyst in case other people are confused...
"The normal way of starting Uru in order to play Until Uru will not work (if you try to start it the normal way, the game will crash upon trying to obtain player profile). To start Until Uru, you need to goto start -> programs -> 'Cyan Worlds' folder -> 'Until Uru' folder -> select 'Play Until Uru'.
"Also, it is possible install 2 copies of Uru on the same computer... after your initial installation (which for most people would include Path of the Shell), simply pop in your original Uru: Ages Beyond Myst CD, then open Windows explorer to look in the content of the CD, then go into the installation directory and double click on the executable file in that folder. The game setup will detect you have an existing installation and asks if you wish to overwrite it... select no and under install path choose a different folder. After installation, both versions of Uru will work.
"Have fun everyone!"

Plasma...Until Uru
This must been seen to be believed: Untìl Uru. "Uru was built for people - a place for people to meet, grow and wonder.
The deep city came alive with the sounds of life - and then it was silent again.
But the life of Uru is in the people. It will not awaken again until Uru has people again
...Untìl Uru has people again.
This is not Uru, or Uru Live. It's only a breath, a spirit of what Uru was. It's a heartbeat until Uru can slowly grow again.
...Untìl Uru can slowly grow again."

Great Review of Path of the Shell: "Thriller in the Myst"
By Bennett Ring
Game of the week
Uru Complete Chronicles, Rating: * * * *
"If you're not looking for a cerebral challenge that rivals your local Mensa group's entrance exam, this isn't the game for you. If you'd like to play a game that'll stretch your brain cells while taking you on a fantastic journey, Uru Complete Chronicles won't disappoint.
"It's the latest in the popular Myst series and, while the core gameplay is still based around mentally taxing puzzles, it's a very different experience to the earlier Myst games.
"Instead of the sterile, two-dimensional graphics, Uru is completely 3D. And what a beautiful 3D world it is. This has made the game a more immersing and believable experience than its pre-rendered predecessor, but the tradeoff is more demanding hardware requirements. The controls are also a little finicky, especially when you are trying to complete a puzzle that requires precise movements.
"The Complete Chronicles includes Uru, which was released about six months ago, as well as two expansion packs. To D'ni is the first of these. It can be downloaded for free if you already own Uru. The Path of the Shell is the other expansion pack, which can be bought separately for $39.95 - again, you must already own Uru.
"When Uru was released it split Myst fans. Some loved it while others loathed it. The expansion packs are likely to do the same. If you understood what Uru was trying to do, you'll spend hours joyfully exploring the dream-like worlds of the new expansion packs. If you didn't like the original, you still won't enjoy the expansion packs.
"For those who didn't get to see Uru the first time around and want a game that's more mentally stimulating than simply shooting everything that moves, Uru Complete Chronicles is worthy of your attention.
"Endgame: An intellectual excursion into a breathtaking fantasy land."
